Description
The future-proofing of jobs and skills is one key area through which the European Green Deal aims to improve the wellbeing and health of citizens in the EU. At the same time, the lack of a sufficient workforce with the relevant skillsets at the right locations is a significant bottleneck in the way of a successful green-digital twin transition. This issue has gained even more urgency in the context of REPowerEU, the European Commission's plan to end the EU's dependence on Russian fossil fuels while further tackling the climate crisis. This report synthesises information on skills policies and response initiatives in the context of the clean energy transition in Europe. An overview is provided of skills monitoring and anticipation approaches, as well as skills classification initiatives. Key elements of fit-for-future skillsets are identified and the overarching EU skills policy framework is outlined. This is followed by an overview of skills needs and policy responses in a selection of industrial ecosystems which are key to the clean energy transition, addressing: wind, solar, offshore renewable energy, geothermal energy, heat pumps, buildings, the automotive and battery industries, and hydrogen and fuel cells.
