Overview

  • Main implementing organisation: Fuenlabrada City

  • EU funding programme supporting the project: European Regional Development Fund

  • EU funding contribution: €3 593 342.2

  • Country: Spain

The Spanish municipality of Fuenlabrada has experienced sharp population growth since the 1980s, particularly due to national and international migration. However, unemployment represents a barrier for migrants’ inclusion and limits their ability to escape poverty.

The Migrants Labour Integration Model Based on Acculturation (MILMA) project worked to reduce unemployment for lower skilled young people from an immigrant background in Fuenlabrada City, Spain, by delivering job-specific training and upskilling.

The MILMA project taught specific skills for individual job roles, but also developed participant’s soft skills within ICT, communication, and employability, which included CV improvement, interview preparation, and elevator pitches.

MILMA successfully developed three online training courses to improve the skills of the participants remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Building close cooperation with local businesses was crucial for the implementation of the courses, to ensure that the training would match both the learners’ and the employers’ skills needs. Companies were also involved in providing practical training, teaching seminars and masterclasses, organising visits to their headquarters, and ultimately hiring the individuals who have been trained in response to the job market’s needs.

In terms of results, over 500 people – including over 170 from a migrant background – attended training courses offered by the MILMA project over a period of six months. Beyond delivering training, the MILMA project has achieved many other positive impacts: it fostered social integration by helping improve the relationship between the local and the migrant communities; it contributed to reducing the unemployment rate in Funelebrada; and it promoted social cohesion by supporting the most vulnerable with accessing employment opportunities and ultimately achieve better life prospects.
